Google Material Design Lite: What is Material Design?
Material design is a design language developed by Google, it acts as a guide for visual, motion, and interaction design across platforms and devices.
Understanding the principles of Material Design can help you laid out your website and app design in a flattened manner, with clean lines, an attractive color palette, and a noticeable lack of clutter. The whole design works well on mobile devices.
With Material Design, Google wants to bring uniformity to its UI on all platforms including the web, and not just Android. Google has its own Polymer Project which embraces material design throughout its Web components. In fact, Polymer Project played a key role in material design’s development and in the showcase of Material design concepts for the Web. However, Polymer project is still in early developer preview and not yet ready for production.
You can customize your own themes with a handy color picker, snag individual elements like cards, sliders, and menus, or just use one of their pre-built templates. The whole experience is not quite as turnkey as launching a site onSquarespace, but if you have a modicum of web programming knowledge, the code is simple to implement, and the design work has already been done for you.
Of course, the whole project does beg the question, does it make any sense for any person or company who is not Google to design a website in Material Design? While Material Design solves a major problem on Google’s Android smartphones from an interaction standpoint—it unites disparate software that’s trapped on very small and insulated pieces of hardware with predictable buttons, animations, and menus, so the end user benefits because they get a more familiar experience across apps—it doesn’t necessarily make sense in all web applications. For anyone browsing on an Android phone, a Material Design website is the natural extension of the Android experience. But what about desktop, where we’re already using third party browser controls to navigate, and then another layer of OSX or Windows OS interface is stacked on top of that? The underlying benefits of Material Design’s one interface to rule them all are lost in the noise of a desktop.
Google Material Design Lite: Showing your true colors
Material Design works with two main colors – the primary and accent – both of which you can change easily using the Customise and Preview tool on the site. Simply go to the top of the page, click on Customize (sic) and you’ll see a color wheel with a couple of tags containing the numbers one and two. As you might have already surmised, one is the primary color which will make up the borders of pages, menus, and such, while the two is for smaller elements like buttons. To change the selections just click on a relevant sector of the wheel and this will select a new primary, then click on another sector to choose an accent. You can do this as many times as you like until you’re happy with the selection. At the bottom of the page is a line of code which contains the color references. You’ll notice that it changes each time to alter the selections on the wheel. Once you’re happy with the colors you can simply copy the code into your CSS and now whenever you use a component from Material Design it will know the correct palette to use.
